The New Man at the Helm

The Communal Cooperative Credit Union has celebrated its 44th year with a new man at the helm.

In its existence the Communal has seen a relay of Managers, each running his own leg with major success.
Mr. Michael Brian Campbell took up the baton as the sixth man to hold that position since the Credit Union was established in 1965. He suddenly passed on, leaving the baton to be passed on for another leg in the relay of success for the Communal.

As of October 1st, 2009, the baton was placed in the hand of Mr. Lennox Andrews, who was elected to the board of directors in 2008.

Mr. Andrews received his early education at the St. Andrew’s Methodist School, GBSS and TAMCC, where he graduated in Economics and Mathematics at the Advanced GCE level.
He obtained his first degree in Economics from the Universidad de Camaguey, Cuba in 1985.

On his return to Grenada he was recruited by the Ministry of Finance as Programming Officer with responsibility for the implementation of the government public sector investment programme. Shortly afterwards, he was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a Master’s of Science Degree in Development Economics at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad.
He completed his studies in 1993 with a Thesis entitled “Structural Adjustment and Growth in the Caribbean” a section of which was published in a North American Economic Journal entitled “Review of Black Political Economy.”
In 1997 he moved to the ECCB as Country Economist for Grenada and Montserrat. In December 2000, Mr. Andrews was asked to return to his Homeland to take up the position of Fiscal Advisor in the Ministry of Finance. Shortly afterwards he was made Deputy Permanent Secretary, a position he held until October 2005 when he was asked to function as Permanent Secretary for 28 months in the said Ministry.
His last major appointment with the Government of Grenada was Coordinator of the Office of the European Commission in Grenada for one year during which time he was able to secure a grant of EC$14 million from the EU for the Government and People of Grenada.
In his years as a public Servant Mr. Andrews served as a Board member on a number of Statutory Bodies. In addition, Mr. Andrews was instrumental in seeking funding and in the preparation and implementation of a number of social and economic projects in Grenada.
In his academic career, he published three major articles in international journals. He is presently working on publishing his book entitled “Macroeconomic Management and Growth in the OECS” which summarizes his major works and ideas on the development strategies for OECS countries.

The Board of Directors, Credit and Supervisory Committees, staff and the general membership welcome Mr. Andrews & wish him good success and a very cordial working relationship with us, we believe that his experience, academic achievements and wide range connection would auger well for the continued success and vibrant growth of the prestigious Communal Credit Union Ltd., which is a household name in Grenada and beyond.
